Emma Alvey

Emma Mei Alvey
February 11, 2004 - October 24, 2005

Emma was born on February 11, 2005. She had been abandoned along the road eight days after she was born. She was found wrapped in a blanket with a piece of paper that stated her birthday. When she was eleven days old, she was taken into foster care. She was adopted by Phillip and Jennifer Alvey. The couple had wanted to adopt a child for a while and they had the name "Emma" picked out for their future daughter for ten years.

When Jennifer Alvey was asked on adoption forms how she would discipline a child, she said she would never strike a child. She would set limits that were age appropriate, and that he child would know, even if they did something wrong, she still loved them. Emma passed away when she was twenty months old after being shaken by her mother, Jennifer. Jennifer told police that she had shaken Emma "without thinking." During the shaking, Emma's head had hit a coffee table, causing significant injuries.

Jennifer initially had lied about how Emma's injuries were caused and later told police that she had lied because she was scared. She said she had lied because she didn't want to hurt her husband or the rest of her family. She noted that she knew people hated people who hurt children, and that she also hated people who hurt children. She said she didn't plan to hurt Emma.

On the day Emma was injured, Jennifer claimed that she had been working in her kitchen when Emma started fussing. She said she went to see what was wrong, and, without thinking, shook Emma, hitting her head on the coffee table. She said she then cuddled Emma and put her down for a nap.

Emma passed away during her "nap" and was taken to the hospital where she was treated for six days before passing away. Because Jennifer was the only one home with Emma when she was injured, Jennifer was charged with first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect, and reckless homicide.

Jennifer pleaded guilty to the charges and received one year in prison and fourteen years of probation.

Kaede Ariyama

Kaede Ariyama
--- - November 17, 2004
Kaede was seven years old when she passed away. On the day Kaede died, a newspaper delivery man named Kaoru Kobayashi kidnapped her as she walked home from her elementary school. He used Kaede's cellphone to text her mother a photograph of Kaede with the message, "I've got your daughter." He also sent the picture of Kaede to his own cellphone.

After killing Kaede, Kaoru left her body in town. Her body was found the same night. An autopsy revealed that she had been drowned. The water she had been drowned in wasn't dirty, so it was believed that she was drowned in a bathtub or a sink. It also looked liked Kaede had been undressed before her death and redressed after her death. There were also abrasions on her body that were made after her death. Some of her teeth had been knocked out after her death as well.

On December 14, 2004, Kaoru sent an email from Kaede's cellphone, which was still in his possession, to Kaede's mother. The message threatened that he would take Kaede's younger sister next. He sent a photograph of Kaede in this email as well. Kaoru had also shown a photograph of Kaede to a waitress at a restaurant. He told the waitress that he had found the photograph online.

On December 30, 2004, Kaoru was arrested for kidnapping. His use of Kaede's cellphone greatly helped investigators, as the messages were logged in nearby cellphone towers. In his home, police found a collection of child pornography as well as Kaede's cellphone. There were also several pairs of underwear that he had stolen from other people. A witness reported that they saw Kaede walking to Kaoru's car, but Kaoru said that, had Kaede not been there, he would have "kidnapped anyone." Kaoru had previous records of sexual crimes against young girls.

During his trial, Kaoru said that he wanted to be sentenced to death quickly and leave a "legacy" like those of serial killers who killed many children, Tsutomu Miyazaki and Mamoru Takuma. Both Tsutomu and Takuma were also diagnosed as insane. Kaoru's psychologist said that he was a pedophile and was anti-social, but he was sane enough to understand his actions and know what he was doing. In September of 2006 he was found guilty and was sentenced to death.

Landan Harris

Landan Michael Everett Harris
August 17, 2003 - November 16, 2006
Landan was born on August 17, 2003. He was his parents' only child, but after his death, he became a big brother. He was known for being very sweet and kind. He loved playing with his pet guinea pig, and his guinea pig passed away just a few days after Landan did. Just two days before Landan passed away, he was acting unusually fussy. His stepfather put him down for a nap because he and Landan's mother thought that he might be tired.

When Landan woke up, he was still fussy. He kept touching his throat so his mother asked him if his throat hurt. Landan said it did. His mother thought he might have a cold so she went to the store to get some medication for him. He slept in the living room on and off for the rest of the day. Around 10:00 p.m. he was put to bed in his mother's room. Around 2:00 in the morning he was given more medication. He woke up about an hour later and asked for more juice. At 6:00 a.m. his mother got him more juice again.

At 9:00 a.m. Landan's mother woke up to find Landan laying on the floor. He appeared to be covered in bruises. She called her mother and then called 911. Paramedics arrived and rushed Landan to the hospital. The last thing Landan said to his mother was, "Mama, hold me." She couldn't because doctors had to try and save his life and there was no time to spare. Landan's mother and grandmother waited in the hallway. His grandmother asked if he was going to be okay and was told that he was a very sick little boy.

Eventually, a doctor told them that Landan was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, which has a 90% mortality rate. They were allowed to go see Landan, but they had to dress in scrubs with masks and gloves to help protect him. His foot, nose, and back were severely discolored, as was much of his body, though in smaller patches. His body was bleeding and clotting at the same time, causing the discoloration.

Landan stayed at the hospital for twenty-three hours. He had three hyperbaric chamber treatments. Unfortunately, Landan went into cardiac arrest. Doctors attempted to save him but nothing could be done, and he passed away. He was three years old.

Weslea Teraberry

Weslea Adriane Ellen Teraberry
June 2, 2003 - February 15, 2008
Weslea was born on June 2, 2003 to Chantal and Keith Teraberry. Weslea was a kind little girl who liked her friends, family, singing, Disney princesses, jigsaw puzzles, drawing, and school. She had two older sisters named Paige and Maggie. She loved her pink cowboy boots, and she would often wake up in the middle of the night and sneak into her parents' room to sleep in their bed with them.

The day Weslea passed away was much like any other day at her house. Later in the day, Weslea's mother had started cooking dinner and was answering an email when her six year old daughter came to her to inform her that "Weslea's sleeping funny." Her mother didn't think this was such a big deal. Weslea often fell asleep in funny positions, sometimes under tables or even while playing. When she followed her other daughter to Weslea, she saw that Weslea was standing up. She thought it was funny that she was sleeping standing up and told her other daughter to go get her father, as he would want to see it.

Weslea's mother got on the bed that Weslea was standing on and became alarmed when Weslea didn't move when she got on the bed. Only then did she see the window blind cord wrapped around Weslea's neck. She quickly took the cord off of Weslea and grabbed her, rushing her daughter to her husband. They called for help and Weslea was rushed to the hospital.

Doctors managed to get Weslea to take small breaths, but she needed to be life-flighted to another hospital. Friends drove Weslea's parents to the hospital where, after some time, they were told that Weslea had been worked on for forty-five minutes, but she passed away around five minutes after she arrived at the second hospital, and nothing they tried saved her. Weslea's parents decided to help Weslea save the lives of others by donating her organs.

November 29, 2005 - February 12, 2009
Kaylan was born on November 29, 2005 to Rocky Broumley and Joy Simmons. She loved being outside, but she hated wearing shoes. She had four sisters named Angel, Kyelie, Kayla, and Kayden. Kayden passed away before Kaylan did. She had a brother named Cody. She had a soon-to-be-step-mother named Shelbi. At the time of Kaylan's death, her mother was dating a man named Anthony Roberts.

Shortly before Kaylan passed away, she was taken to the hospital by her mother. Her mother reported that Kaylan was injured after falling off of a horse. Doctors didn't think this was accurate, as Kaylan had a severe brain injury, burns on her toes and feet, and bruises on her face, neck, thighs, back, and ribs. The bruises were in multiple stages of healing, meaning that whatever had happened to Kaylan had happened on more than one occasion.

After Kaylan passed away, an autopsy report showed that she died due to blunt force trauma to her head. Her mother, Joy, said that Kaylan had been left alone with Anthony while her mother wasn't at home. Joy said that when she returned home, Kaylan's four year old sister told her that Anthony had hit Kaylan.

Anthony was questioned by investigators and eventually admitted that Kaylan had not fallen off a horse. He also said that he may have accidentally injured her when he tried to revive her after Joy told him that she had found Kaylan unresponsive. Anthony then said that he shook Kaylan and put his hands over her mouth to prevent her from crying.

Both Anthony and Joy were suspected of killing Kaylan. Joy pleaded guilty to child neglect and was sentenced to twelve years. Anthony pleaded guilty to child abuse and was sentenced to twelve years as well.

Aliyah Branum

Aliyah Marie Branum
October 25, 2010 - April 26, 2013
Aliyah was born in 2010 to Chelsea Huggett and Joshua Allen. She had a step-father named Jason Ruane. She also had a sister named Amelia. On the day Aliyah died, her mother told police that Aliyah had died because her step-father had sprayed bug spray around the house, It was clear that this was not the truth. Chelsea went on to say that she believed her room mate may have killed Aliyah. It was clear to investigators that Aliyah had been abused.

Aliyah's death wasn't the first instance where someone believed she was being abused. The year before, one of Chelsea's coworkers reported that she had seen Chelsea abuse Aliyah by hitting her on her back and covering her mouth and nose to make her stop crying. There was even another case of reported abuse when Aliyah was kept in a soiled diaper for several hours. Child services investigated the situation and determined that there were no signs that Aliyah was being abused.

There was yet another investigation by child services when it was reported that the living conditions Aliyah lived in were not safe, and a mark on her neck was reported. Again, child services claimed that there was no evidence that Aliyah was an abused child, however they did offer day care services for Aliyah so they could keep an eye on her, and Chelsea agreed to let Aliyah attend day care.

When Aliyah passed away, an autopsy showed that her skull was fractured. Her brain was hemorrhaging and there were many bruises on her forehead, cheeks, lips, ears, shoulders, back, and vaginal area. There was also blood coming from her nose. Her mother, Chelsea, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was arrested for beating and killing Aliyah. She was interviewed many times and eventually she told the truth about what had happened to Aliyah.

Chelsea said that two days before Aliyah died, she had called 911 for an ambulance because Aliyah's hands were swollen and she wasn't acting how she normally did. The next day, she said that she knew she should take Aliyah to the hospital because she could tell her child was very badly injured, but she didn't take her to the hospital because she knew that doctors would see the bruises on her and she would be reported for child abuse.

Chelsea admitted that Aliyah had been whining and wanting to sit on her lap, causing Chelsea to become annoyed with her and eventually shake her. She said that she had shaken Aliyah several times in the days leading up to her death. In the early morning hours of the day Aliyah died, Chelsea had shaken her and covered her nose and mouth because Aliyah would not be quiet. She slammed Aliyah's head into a wall, causing Aliyah to lose consciousness, though she was still alive after hitting the wall.

Chelsea realized that she had severely injured her daughter, but she didn't take Aliyah to the hospital. Instead, she laid her down in a bed and laid down beside her. Nobody did anything to help Aliyah until Chelsea's room mate came home and noticed that something was wrong with Aliyah and called 911 to try and save her life. Unfortunately, Aliyah had been significantly injured and didn't get medical help in time.

Investigators knew that Aliyah had been beaten. Chelsea was arrested and charged with first degree murder and child abuse. In court, Chelsea took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to child abuse and second degree murder. She was sentenced to thirty years in prison.

Rubie was born on June 25, 2008 to Helen Teal and Scott Boland Jr. On the day before Rubie passed away, she was left in the care of her mother's boyfriend, Andrew Roberts, while her mother was at work. Andrew admitted that while he watched Rubie, he had picked her up by her feet, shaken her, and slammed her head against the ground multiple times. He told police that he did this because he was having a bad day, and Rubie had accidentally wet herself.

Rubie was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced brain dead and eventually taken off life support. It was obvious to hospital staff that Rubie had been abused. Her death was ruled as a homicide. Initially, Andrew told investigators that Rubie had fallen off the couch and hit her head on the floor. He had taken Rubie to her grandmother who had called 911 when she saw that something was very wrong.

When Andrew was questioned about what exactly had happened, he eventually gave his second story, explaining that he had become enraged about Rubie's soiled pants. He said that he had been so angry because he had been high on marijuana at the time, and that he lied in his first statement about what happened because he was afraid. He pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

Daniel Benoit

Daniel Christopher Benoit
February 25, 2000 - June 22, 2007
Daniel was born on February 25, 2000 to Chris and Nancy Benoit. He was known as being a smart and happy boy who loved going to the beach with his grandparents and reading with his aunt. He loved animals and some of his best friends were his two German Shepherd dogs. He also rode horses at his neighbor's camp and enjoyed watching shows involving animals on the television.

On June 22, 2007, Daniel's father, Chris, killed Daniel's mother, Nancy, in a bedroom in their home. When her body was discovered, her limbs were tied and her body was wrapped in a towel. It is believed that Chris put his knee on her back and pulled a cord around her neck, strangling her. Daniel had been suffocated and killed in his bedroom. He had been sedated with Xanax and investigators believe he was unconscious when he was killed.

The day after Chris killed Nancy and Daniel, he left a voicemail for one of his friends. When his friend called him back, he stated Chris sounded groggy and tired. His friend was concerned about his tone and called him again twelve minutes later. This time, Chris did not answer, so his friend left a voicemail.

Around fifteen minutes after his friend left a voicemail, Chris called him back. He said he hadn't answered the previous call because he had been calling Delta airlines to change a flight. He said he had a stressful day and stated that Nancy and Daniel both had food poisoning. The friend told him that if he needed to talk, he was there for him. Chris told him that he loved him before leaving. Still, the friend thought something sounded off about Chris's tone and behavior.

On June 24, multiple texts were sent from both Chris and Nancy's phones. Four texts were the Benoit family's address and one text stated that the family dogs could be found in a pool enclosure and that the garage's side door was left open. Chris committed suicide by hanging himself. On June 25, Chris's friend spoke of the text messages Chris had sent and police were sent to check on Chris. They discovered the bodies of Nancy, Daniel, and Chris, as well as a suicide note from Chris.

Sydney was born on July 14, 2001. Her mother was Bridgette Barr and she had a younger brother named Garrett. Sydney, Bridgette, and Garrett were all killed by a man named James Miller. James was Bridgette's boyfriend and he admitted to strangling Bridgette and Sydney to death, but when he was questioned about Garrett's death, he claimed that he could not remember what happened to him, but that he had probably killed him.

Garrett and Sydney were most often with their father, Ray Barr, but had been visiting their mother, Bridgette, for Christmas, as they visited her for a few weeks in the summer, and some weekends and holidays. James had killed the three and lived in the home with their bodies for five days after their deaths. Police only found the bodies after James's father called police to ask that they check on the family.

Bridgette and Sydney were found dead on a the floor of a bedroom with a blanket covering their bodies. Garrett's body was found inside of a bathtub. Sydney had also been stabbed in the neck, and Garrett's autopsy suggested that he had been placed inside a heated oven for a period of time before he was placed in the bathtub where he was found. After James admitted that he had killed Sydney, Bridgette, and Garrett, he was given the death penalty.

Whitney had only been dating Kenneth for a few months, but had known him for years, and she felt comfortable leaving her son in his care.

On March 12, 2009, Gabriel's mother arrived home from work to discover police and paramedics at her home. Gabriel had been rushed to the hospital. When paramedics arrived, they found Gabriel unresponsive and blue. He had been laying on the floor near the couch. Kenneth reported that he had called 911 after Gabriel began vomiting and struggling to breathe.

Eventually, a volunteer firefighter managed to get Kenneth to admit that he had thrown Gabriel onto the couch while they were playing. By the time Gabriel had arrived at the hospital, he was in full cardiac arrest. Doctors attempted to save him for thirty minutes before it became clear that nothing else could be done, and Gabriel passed away.

Gabriel's cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries to his head that had to have been caused by a very strong force. It was determined that the force from a fall or another accident of the sort could not have possibly caused the injuries that ended Gabriel's life.

Kenneth was charged with killing Gabriel. Kenneth maintained that he had spent the morning of Gabriel's death cleaning the house and playing with Gabriel. He admitted again that Gabriel may have hit his head on the couch, but denied that he had ever harmed Gabriel. He stuck to his story about Gabriel vomiting and struggling to breathe before he called 911.

Investigators, however, believed that Kenneth had intentionally struck Gabriel several times, causing the injuries that ultimately ended his life. They also believed that he had cleaned up the scene before calling for help, as when help arrived, the home smelled of cleaning supplies, and only traces of Gabriel's blood were found throughout the home. The jury agreed with investigators and found Kenneth guilty of murder. He was sentenced to fifty-five years.

Sokhim was born on October 5, 1982. She was a student at Cleveland Elementary School. On the day Sokhim passed away, an anonymous caller reported a death threat to the police regarding Cleveland Elementary School. Around noon of the same day, a man named Patrick Purdy set his car, which had fireworks inside of it, on fire near the elementary school.

Next, Patrick went to the school's playground. Some students were outside playing, and Patrick began firing with his semi-automatic rifle. In just three minutes, Patrick had killed five students, Sokhim being one of them, and injured thirty more people, all of which were students with the exception of one teacher.
